More than 150 guests came to our House of Commons reception 23 October 2008, to celebrate Parents' Week with us. Keynote speeches were given by our new trustee Dr Tanya Byron and Trevor Phillips OBE, Chair of the Equalities and Human Rights Commission.

It was also announced that Jennifer Saunders is to become a patron of the Family and Parenting Institute.

Trevor Phillips urged us not to abandon the equalities agenda or progressive measures like flexible working because of the impending recession, but reminded us that these were the exactly what was most needed to support hard-pressed families when jobs were at risk and parents under financial pressure.

Dr Tanya Byron told the audience to remember not just the negative but ask what are the protective factors within families and to remember that these protective factors are our children because they are simple, straight forward and honest and they want to be loved, cuddled, read to, sung to and entertained with stories from our childhoods.
